Innovation, Services and Smart Information Use Symposium
The Sofitel Hotel, Melbourne. 4 July 2008
This symposium is being conducted by CSIRO and the Statistical Society
of Australia (SSAI). It is a satellite meeting of the Australian
Statistical Conference (30 June - 3 July 2008) in Melbourne.
This
initiative is part of a broader push for science to contribute to the
development of new service industries and improve the efficiency and
competitiveness of existing ones.
New technologies are creating
opportunities for enterprises to increase productivity and
competitiveness, reduce risk and create new service businesses by using
new data and information in innovative ways.
We are moving to an
era of evidence-based decision-making and evidence-based policy.
Enterprises seeking superior performance will be exploiting these
directly and partnering with companies specialising in smarter
extraction of useable information. Key to these partnerships will be
more efficient methods for managing and modeling uncertainty in
decision making to provide decision makers with greater confidence.
Outline
In this one-day symposium we will consider:
- what are the new technologies that will create new information sources and opportunities?
- how will this impact on the decision making approaches in the modern corporation?
- what are the opportunities and who are the potential beneficiaries?
- what challenges face the research community to enable this revolution to unfold?

Open Universities Fast Thinking Awards
October 2008
The Open Universities Fast Thinking Innovation Awards have been launched for 2008 and beyond!
AwardsFast Thinking in association with Open Universities and our partners are researching which companies and organisations in Australia are the most innovative. The results will culminate in a VIP Awards celebration later this year.
Well constructed, purposeful awards perform a valuable service to society. When administered effectively they demonstrate leadership and create attention and discussion on the issues they report on.
The need for Innovation in our society is paramount and a concerted effort to encourage it one of the most vital undertakings in Australia today.
Our view is that the goal of the awards is to draw attention to outstanding examples of various forms of innovation and to explain them clearly and in some detail, rather than to merely note an achievement briefly. This is an essential difference. It implies the on passing of genuine and applicable knowledge to the leadership community.
For further information on how you can be involved with Fast Thinking, the awards and the extensive marketing programs contact the Fast Thinking publisher Grant Crossley by clicking here to email him or call his Mobile: +61 (0)408 844 009.
