Custom Sheetmetal Shop Keeps Work at Home

7 May 09

The Custom Group, a fabricator, manufacturer, and assembler, has expanded its in-house production capability to include complete air-conditioning unit assembly.

The company identified the air-conditioning industry as being one of the under-served sectors where domestic outsourcing is concerned.

"The air-conditioning industry is quite capital intensive, and many Australian businesses blindly believe there are no cost efficiencies in manufacturing and assembling in this country," said Greg Wallis, Custom Group managing director.

"We have proved the opposite with our air-conditioning clients. With clever planning, accurate cost estimations, the right assembly facility, dedicated and skilled personnel, as well as regular dialogue with clients, domestic manufacture and assembly gives a better level of predictability and eliminates transport and delivery glitches.”

Wallis said that his company’s system is an example of the contract manufacturing facility that prevents companies from setting up inadequate in-house operations or farming out assembly across several businesses.

Clients issue components and parts to the Custom Group’s air-conditioning section, which then begins assembly according to the clients’ specifications.

Custom Group then undergoes the process, working with clients to plan and engineer optimised solutions and provide automated order tracking, design assistance, complex manufacturing, and quality certification.

Its Sydney facility features a range of manufacturing capabilities, including automation, bending and folding, laser profiling, mechanical and hydraulic pressing, MIG and TIG welding, stud and spot welding, surface finishing, ferrule insertion, powder coating, materials handling, and final assembly.

The forming machines are equipped with integrated loading and unloading facilities that allow the company to continue unattended through the night.
