Precision Out-of-Round Grinding Technology
9 Apr 08
Machining of out-of-round forms is typically complicated and predominantly performed for mould and die production.
It usually involved a variety of surface and jig grinding machines for production of a simple part.
It also took a long time to achieve a specified angle and geometric tolerance, due to multiple clamping.
With modern developments, the production process can be done by a single universal cylindrical grinding machine.
With the introduction of the c-axis, grinding machines can handle grind very complex out-of-round work pieces.
Rosebank Engineering has released a compact CNC universal cylindrical grinding machine, equipped with c-axis (round axis of the work-head spindle) and software module, StuderFormHSM, for the machining of curves and polygons.
The axis drives are controlled for high-speed-machining operations, allowing for high precision in non-circular grinding.
The product’s software allows the machining of inner and outer geometrical contours including polygons, eccentrics, casting moulds, control cams, camshafts and crankshafts, cam rings, die punches and stamping dies, press punches for indexable inserts or billets, non-circular watch glasses, face cams on faces, and knee joint implants (orthopedic implant grinding in titanium and stainless steel).
The software automatically calculates all corresponding technology data.
Axis motions and acceleration values beyond the machine’s capabilities are automatically visualised.
The technology is capable of machining at optimal feeds and rpm for maximum output with no surface damage.
The software also offers correction and analysis options immediately after form errors are detected.
The unit also includes software that contains standard geometry macros used in the industry, with extended versions to cater for customer specific macros also available.
DXF, IGES, VDAFS, and ISO formats support a range of imported optional geometry macros, with software support also extending to polar and Cartesian coordinates and Excel lists.
The machine caters for internal and external cylindrical grinding of mid-sized work pieces in one clamping, and is supplied with a special machine bed made of a mineral casting.
