Innovative New Manufacturing Process For Orthopaedic Medical Implants
27 Feb 09
A manufacturer of machining equipment has developed an innovative new technology that could change the medical equipment market.
The company has adapted, and recently launched onto the market, a more effective, efficient and economical thread whirling process for surgical screw production with the MultiAlpha 8x20 multi-spindle turning machines.
The MultiAlpha has eight powered spindles and 5-tool counter spindle, which means a production process five times faster than that of a traditional single-spindle turning machine. The MultiAlpha swiss-turn lathes can produce finely turned work pieces that would not have been possible to manufacture even 5 years ago.
Tornos has also designed a CNC controlled limit stop, which allows the MultiAlpha bar-turner to program various batches consisting of shorter runs, but the same diameter, in one extended operation.
Many other kinds of medical work pieces are also being manufactured on this same family of turning machines, such as polyaxial heads for spine operations, complimentary work pieces for surgical screws and even orthopaedic screws.
