Ceramic machining can be accomplished using conventional machining techniques when the ceramic material is in its 'green' state. The ceramic is fired to remove the binder after machining to size.
Fired ceramics can also be machined but require more advanced machining techniques. Machining fired ceramics can be accomplished using laser machining techniques and ultrasonic milling techniques, grinding techniques or cutting with diamond tools.
Machining of ceramics also includes the production if industrial rubies. Industrial rubies or synthetic rubies are precisely machined and used in applications where inertness to the environment and resistance to corrosion is required such as in corrosive fluid valves.
