ForĀ some products such as medical manufacturing, it is critically important that no contaminants are introduced into the product during the manufacturing process. Some examples are moulding of medical components for implants, moulding of plastic components for the semi-conductor manufacturing industry and for other industries such as military equipment, space exploration equipment and micro-fluidics.
Some polymers when moulded have a tendency to attract particles from the surrounding air or surfaces. Liquid Silicon Rubber (LSR) is one such polymer which is often used to mould medical face masks and seals.
To reduce or eliminate the particle contamination, the components are required to be moulded in a clean room following strict cleanliness protocols. The product designer will typically specify the class of cleanroom required depending the the application requirements. Clean rooms varying from class 350 to 10,000 may be suited to medical products. For micro-fluidics, mems deviceĀ and silicon wafer application clean rooms down to class 100 may be required.
