A CNC router is an extremely useful and versatile machine tool used in a large variety of industries. CNC routers come in various configurations, but a typical machine uses a small diameter cutter spun at a very high speed with computer controlled motion in 2, 3 or even 5 axis as with a conventional milling machine.
The main difference between a CNC machine and a CNC router is the spindle and feed speeds available. CNC routers are made to operate at high speed to cut soft materials such as aluminium, wood, plastic and composites. CNC routers may spin at high speed, but they are of lighter construction and have low torque making them unsuitable for most heavy cut or metal machining applications other than engraving.
As well as the obvious applications which replicate the uses for a conventional wood working router, some typical uses for CNC routers include all types of engraving on plastics metals and wood. Routing of 3D shapes in wood and plastic for rapid prototyping and mould making. High speed cutting or trepanning of profiles in materials such as wood, plastic, sheet metal, PCBs and composites. Slotting of tubes, sections and extrusions.
