Turning, CNC turning, or manual turning is the process of used to produce cylindrical components. A cylindrical piece of stock is rotated and a cutting tool is traversed along 2 axes of motion to produce precise diameters and depths. Turning can be either on the outside of the cylinder or one can perform inside diameter turning (also known as boring) to produce tubular like components to various geometries. A machine tool that performs turning is called a lathe. Turning can also be used to produce features on a cylindrical component such as diameters, threads, worms, grooves and profiles.
Traditional turning operations like those listed above can be performed by a CNC lathe quickly and efficiently. CNC turning is particularly well suited to large batch volumes requiring a high level of accuracy and repeatability, or for turning components with a high level of complexity. Bar fed CNC lathes can be operated automatically without a human operator continuously monitoring the machine. Very high volume CNC turning can be cost effectively manufactured using CNC lathes with multiple spindles.
