In most processes to manufacture composite components or fiberglass components, a mold needs to be made. These can be simple wooden, plastic or resin molds to small volumes of parts, or they can be metal molds for volume production of composite components.
Wooden composite molds or fiberglass molds can be simply produced by a combination of carpentry and CNC routing.
Plastic composite molds can be produced using thermoforming, plastic fabrication, CNC routing or simple pour molding of liquid resins.
Metal composite molds or fiberglass moulds are produced by conventional toolmaking methods such as CNC machining or in the case of larger moulds for panels and fairings, the molds may first be fabricated before finishing using CNC machining.
Many composite molds may also need to be designed to be placed in an autoclave for autoclave curing.
