Hotwire cutting is normally a CNC cutting process used for cutting soft, non-metal materials. Used for cutting shapes in 2D, a hot wire can very quickly cut profiles in open or closed cell foams and plastics.
Applications for hotwire cutting include custom packaging components from closed cell foam and Styrofoam.
A CNC hotwire cutter can cut both 3D and 3D shapes. Another common application for CNC hotwire cutting for 3D shapes is the shaping of styrofoam for presentaitons, displays, props, signage and stage displays. 3D shaped styrofoam can also be used as a pattern for casting metal using the lost foam process.
