Fine laser cutting or Nd:YAG laser cutting is an advanced cutting process for producing very detailed, accurate cuts in thin materials. The demand for ever finer and more precise structures, especially in medical technology and electronics, can now be met only to a limited degree by conventional processes, if at all. Modern solid-state or gas lasers, on the other hand, can process almost all metals and metal alloys quickly and precisely. As opposed to ‘rougher’ processes such as CO2 laser cutting, fine laser cutting is the process of cutting extremely fine detail into delicate parts or parts requiring a high degree of accuracy. Fine laser cutting is typically carried out on machines with accurate axis movements using Nd:YAG or solid state lasers.
A
wide variety of materials both metallic and non-metallic and hard
materials can be cut with this process. Some typical examples of
applications for fine laser cutting are surgical stents, surgical
blades and saws, electrical contacts, micro-heating elements and
micro-drilling. As in the case of stents, a fine laser cutter is also
capable of cutting details into a cylindrical component if equipped
with a rotary axis.
Many fine laser cutters are also capable of performing laser drilling and laser welding operations.
