Oxy profile cutting is a low cost method of cutting two dimensional profiles from steel sheet and plate. The cutting process is exactly the same as for conventional, hand held oxy cutting. The key difference is that the cutting path is computer controlled.

Oxy profile cutting is widely used by fabrication and heavy engineering shops to cut profiles from steel plate for subsequent welding into fabricated assemblies. Profile programming is easily carried out by 2 common methods. Some machines are capable of simply following a profile drawn or printed at 1:1 on paper. The more common method is to simply export a 2D profile from any of the common CAD packages as a dxf for loading into the machines programming software. Most machines also come preprogrammed with a large catalogue of standard shapes which can simply be adjusted in size to suit the design.

As with conventional oxy cutting, the cut produced is fairly coarse and may require post-finishing operations such as grinding or machining if a higher quality finish is required. Oxy profile cutting is a low cost alterative to laser and plasma cutting when high quality cut finishes and low heat input are not required.
