To shape metal components for fabrication, fabrication shops require the ability to be able to bend, form and roll metal plates or sheets to shape them. Typical machinery used to carry out these operations includes presses, rollformers, curve rollers, CNC plate benders and hand forming techniques such as heating and bending. Using these machines it is possible to bend or fold plates to various angles, roll curves, roll shapes and create features in metal plates and sheets. These components are then commonly welded, bolted or riveted into other assemblies as part of the fabrication process.
Lighter machines are able to handle thinner gauge metals, but large, robust machines are required to bend and form thick plates for heavy engineering applications thus this is oftern a specialised area. Heavy plate bending or heavy plate rolling is often used to fabricate mining equipment, railway carriages, structural components for ship building, armoured vehicles, boilers and heavy transport equipment to name a few.
Metal bending and forming is also used to bend structural shapes to impart curves. Bent and formed structural steel is commonly used for architectural structures, or to elminate the need to fabricate welded structures to accomodate the bends.
