Bevel gears are used to transmit power and motion between 2 intersecting shafts. Most commonly bevel gears are used to transmit power and motion through 2 shafts intersecting at 90 degrees. Bevel gears can also have more than one input or output shaft as in a basic transmission differential where the input drive shaft transmits power to 2 output axles via twin crown gears.
Bevel gears can be straight cut or spiral cut with straight cut bevel gears being the most common.
Bevel gear cutting either straight or spiral is most commonly performed using a gear hob but gears can also be cut using a single module cutter or a variety of other techniques such as rolling, sintering, forging and metal injection moulding (MIM).
Very large bevel gears as used by large mining processing plants, steel mills, sugar mills and other large equipment can be milled using a large CNC machine and conventional milling cutters.
High precision bevel gears can be hardened and the teeth ground or lapped for higher accuracy.
