Gear Cutting - Hypoid Gears

Hypoid Gear Definition

Hypoid Gears are similar in their general form to bevel gears. However, Hypoid Gears operate on non-intersecting axes. Hypoid Gears have spiral teeth that are curved and oblique, with axes which may be at either right angles or otherwise.

Gears in which the pinion axis intersects the plane of the ring gear at a point below the ring-gear axle and above the outer edge of the ring gear, or above the ring-gear axle and below the outer edge of the ring gear.

Hypoid gears engage with a sliding action which imparts extreme presure on the gear teeth and requires special gear oils to combat the wear.

Hypoid Gear Cutting

Hypoid gears are most commonly cut using CNC gear cutting procedures. The CNC hypoid gear cutter looks like a large face mill, but the rows of cutting edges are shaped to suit the module of the gear teeth (see picture at left). The radius the cutting edges are set at is important for obtaining the right spiral radii. The work piece is rotated at the same time as the cutter is fed and combined with the cutting teeth radius, the complex tooth profile is produced.

Hypoid gear cutting is a complex and specialist gear cutting procedure using special cutters and programming strategies.
