A spur gear is the simplest form of gear with the teeth cut perpendicular to the gear face. Spur gear cutting is the process of machining simple spur gears. Spur gear cutting can be accomplished using a variety of methods including, milling with module cutters, indexed shaper machines, indexed slotter machines, EDM wire cutting, broaching, extrusion, rolling, sintering, metal injection moulding (MIM) and forging techniques. For production environments, spur gear cutting is typically carried out using CNC gear hobbing techniques.
For thinner gears or plastic gears other techniques such as injection moulding, stamping, fine blanking, laser cutting and waterjet cutting can be used.
Chain sprockets are machined using similar techniques to spur gear machining.
