Metal Extrusion Processes - Hollow Shape Extrusion or Semi-Hollow Shape Extrusion, Aluminium Extrusions

Login to get an online quote for hollow shape extrusion or conduct an advanced search of our network.

Hollow extrusions are extrusions with a completely enclosed void through the middle that can be of any shape. The void itself may have any sort of shape, and the complete profile may include a variety of other forms. An example of this type of extrusion is a tube or square section hollow extrusion.

A semi-hollow extrusion is one that partially encloses a void - for example, a circle or rectangle with a gap in one side; but a solid shape can also partially enclose a void, and the difference may not be obvious. It is defined mathematically, by comparing the area of the partially-enclosed void to the size of the gap (actually, to the mathematical square of the gap size). If that ratio is larger than a certain number, the shape is classified as semi-hollow; if the ratio is smaller, the shape is considered a solid.

Aluminium extrusions are by far the most common form of hollow shape extrusions.
