Conventional cylindrical grinding involves rotating the work piece around a pre-drilled centre hole in each end, or by means of holding the work piece in a chuck. But, for work pieces which are difficult to hold in this manner such as long, slender bars centreless grinding is used.
Centreless grinding works by passing the bar along a work rest. On one side of the guide is the grinding wheel and on the other side of the guide is a feed roller or control wheel. The feed roller rotates the bar, pushes it into the grinding wheel and can be angled very slightly to feed the bar along at the same time.
Centreless grinding can be used to grind a wide variety of materials from plastics to soft metals, to mild steels and hardened steels, to carbides and other hard materials.
Centreless grinding is commonly used to produce ground bar stock and chromed bar stock. Ball bearings and other spherical products are also finished using centreless grinding methods.
It is also a common practice to dress the grinding wheel to a desired shape to conduct form grinding. With form grinding the process usually involves ‘plunge cutting’ the job rather than feeding along the length.
Centreless grinding is well suited to automated setups and cnc centreless grinders are common place these days. Many automated setups are also capable of automatically feeding bar stock to the machine and removing it after grinding.
