Machining Processes - Form Grinding

Form grinding can refer to a large range of process. This general category will refer to all these various types of form grinding. Types of form grinding will include form plunge grinding, CNC controlled form grinding, tool and cutter grinding, grinding vees and grooves and other miscellaneous forms of grinding.

Plunge form grinding refers to the practice of dressing the grinding wheel to the desired for to be ground. This form is then cut into the work piece by plunge cutting, or feeding the grinding wheel into the work piece. This form of grinding is commonly used for forms that are short in length as the form is restricted to the width of the grinding wheels available. Plunge cutting for form grinding most commonly refer to cylindrical grinding but can be accomplished with surface grinding to a certain extent.

CNC controlled grinding is where the motion of the work piece as it is fed past the grinding wheel is controlled by numeric control. This allows the grinding of simple and complex curves and shapes onto the work piece. An example of a common use for this type of grinding is the production of convex and concave curved rollers for calendaring, printing and steel production.

Tool and cutter grinding commonly uses a dedicated grinding machine for this specific purpose. The tool and cutter grinder is used both for the re-sharpening of cutting tools such as milling cutters, end mills, slot drills, and single point lather tools, and the sizing or shaping of special purpose cutting and form tools. Tool and cutter grinders are able to be setup for grinding the cutting edges of milling tools on both the end and the periphery of the cutter. Machines with the correct attachments are also capable of grinding the flutes of an end mill for example. See separate category for tool and cutter grinding specifically.

Other miscellaneous types of form grinding are available for special purposes such as groove grinding and shaping of hardened components.
