Micro machining is a specialist, advanced area of the machining field. It can encompass a wide variety of processes with the common theme being the ability to machine very small, finely detailed components accurately.
Micro-machining requires the use of specialized machines, usually designed to run at very high speeds to accommodate the small cutting tools involved. Micro-machining techniques commonly use the following machining processes:
- High speed milling machines with the ability to use small diameter cutters as small as 0.08mm.
- High speed, or Swiss style lathes for turning small, cylindrical components or micro-threading.
- EDM machines with excellent current control for small detailed work.
- Photo-resist etching or lithography processes for fine cutting, machining and 'growing' of nano-structures.
- Electrochemical machining capabilities for producing tiny 3D shapes.
- Fine laser cutting machines for detailed cutting.
- 3D laser machining of cavities and small components.
Some examples of components produced by micro-machining techniques are: Watch gears, shafts and screws, Hearing aid and body implant components, Micro-fluidic channels, Micro-injection moulding dies, Small and finely detailed electrical contacts.
