Thread grinding is used to very accurately grind a screw thread to finished size. A thread grinding machine is very similar to a conventional cylindrical grinding machine, but with the ability to feed the work piece along at a set rate per revolution, the same as thread cutting on a lathe. The grinding wheel is accurately dressed to the thread profile before feeding into and along the work piece.
Very accurate threads can be produced with very fine finishes. Thread grinding also makes it possible to accurately produce accurate threads in hard or hardened materials. Very fine threads can also be produced by using diamond grinding wheels.
Thread grinding is typically used where ever very accurate threads are required. Examples are the ball screws fitted to most machine tools, micrometer threads, fine instrument threads, thread inserts and Archimedes helixes for moulding dies.
