Metal Forging - Open Die Forging

Open die forging is performed between flat dies with no precut profiles in the dies. Movement of the work piece is the key to this method. Typically used for heavy forging operation, larger parts over 150 tons. and 25m in length can be hammered or pressed into shape this way.
Open die forging is also commonly used for custom, low volume parts such as custom lifting hooks, forged ground engaging parts, custom earthmoving parts and more. For low volume parts it is more economical to forge the components using open die methods to avoid the expense of manufacturing a forging tool. Components forged using the open die method can be likened to using the traditional blacksmith methods of forging.
