Metal Forging - Warm Forging or Near-Net-Shape Forging

Register a free buyer account to lodge a Request For Quote for warm forging and receive quotes online.

Warm forging is a metal forging process carried out at lower temperatures than hot forging to produce components having a higher degree of accuracy than hot forging, but with lower forces than required for cold forging.

Warm forging has a number of cost-saving advantages which underscore its increasing use as a manufacturing method. The temperature range for the warm forging of steel runs from above room temperature to below the recrystallization temperature, or from about 800 to 1,800°F. However, the narrower range of from 1,000 to 1,330°F is emerging as the range of perhaps the greatest commercial potential for warm forging. Compared with cold forging, warm forging has the potential advantages of: Reduced tooling loads, reduced press loads, increased steel ductility, elimination of need to anneal prior to forging, and favorable as-forged properties that can eliminate heat treatment.

Recent advances by Australian company Bishop Innovation, have seen this process taken to a new level. Bishop’s innovation was to design and develop a forging process that could produce vehicle steering racks, at a price and in volume, ones that surpassed the performance of conventionally machined racks. The innovation involved the refinement of the warm forging process to the point where Bishop’s forged part could successfully compete with a machined part in a critical precision application like a steering rack.
