A metal stamping process, coining is the squeezing of metal while it is confined in a closed set of dies. Coining gets its name from the fact that this process is used to manufacture currency coins.
How coining works is a workpiece is placed a confined die. A movable punch is located within the die and applies pressure to the metal. The metal flows under the pressure applied by the punch and cold works the material to form intricate features.
This process is used to produce coins, medallions and other similar products on flat stock with relief features. Very fine detail can be reproduced. Pressures as high as 1375 MPa are required to generate very fine features.
