Packaging films are manufactured to have a wide variety of properties. In their most basic form, a packaging film is simply extruded, then run through calendering rollers to obtain the required thickness.
However, packaging films may require certain properties to be imparted such as needing to be able to be heat sealed, they may need a layer that prints easily, they may need an oxygen barrier layer, they may need to enable breathing at a controlled rate or resist certain chemicals.
To impart additional properties to a basic packaging film, films are often manufactured in multiple layers. Additional layers can be added by either co-extrusion, or by laminating the layers together. Different types of polymers can easily be layered this way as can layers of metallic films.
Another type of packaging film that is seeing more and more development is the manufacture of bio films or biodegradable films. These are food packaging films and general packaging films that are either made from renewable resources, or can completely break down in landfill. ManufactureLink has conducted research studies into bio films so please contact us for assistance with finding a suitable bio film or biodegradable packaging manufacturer.
