Electronics Manufacturing Processes - Electronic Component PCB Population, PCB Manufacturing

Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are typically populated in production by 'pick and place' robots. These PCB population robots are fed with electronic components on reels which are inserted into position by the robot arm. The pick and place robot is programmed to place the components in exactly the right position with connections fed through the PCB holes or placed ready for surface mounting. More intelligent pick and place robots are able to test each component before insertion.
Once a PCB has been populated with components, it moves to the soldering section. Soldering techniques may include hand soldering, surface mount soldering using a reflow oven, or production soldering techniques such as laser soldering or robotic techniques. Modern PCB manufacturing techniques make this process fast, efficient and low-cost.
