Dip moulding is a plastic manufacturing process whereby heated metal moulds are immersed or "dipped" in a tank of liquid plastic. The heat from the mould attracts the cool plastic and the part is formed around the mould. The moulds are extracted from the liquid and run through a baking process to cure the plastic. From there, the parts are cooled and stripped from the moulds in preparation for shipment or secondary operations. Basic forms of dip moulding have been around for centuries in candle manufacturing.
As a general rule, dip moulded tooling is less expensive and faster to make than injection moulding tooling and this is one advantage that the industry likes to exploit. This is especially true in the case of prototypes where single moulds can be used to make actual products in days.
