The principle of the gas assisted injection moulding process is that nitrogen gas is injected, during the moulding cycle, either through the sprue or directly into the mould tool. At a controlled high pressure this has the benefit of overcoming sink marks by thinning the volume of plastic in large areas and by the gas pressure countering the effects of sinking. Gas assisted injection moulding can also be used for introducing a cavity without the requirement of a core.
Gas assisted injection moulding is one process also used to produce plastic tubing. The gas is blown down a plastic extruded 'rod' before cooling to produce the internal diameter.
The main two applications of Gas Assisted Moulding are to either inject the gas into the component cavity (internal gas injection), or to use the gas on the outside surface, but still within the mould cavity, to consolidate the component (external gas injection).
