The plastic injection moulding process is a plastics manufacturing process that produces large numbers of parts of high quality with great accuracy, very quickly by injecting molten plastic into a mould cavity before cooling.
Plastic injection moulding works by melting plastic material in the form of granules until soft enough to be injected under pressure to fill a mould. The result is that the shape is exactly copied. Once the plastic moulding has cooled sufficiently to harden the mould opens releasing the part. The whole injection moulding process then repeats.
Injection moulding has a variety of different process (some discussed in more detail as a separate category) such as conventional injection moulding, overmoulding, insert mouding, gas assisted injection moulding, structural foam injection moulding, mico moulding and techniques such as hot runner systems to eliminate the sprue.
