The insert moulding processes is where parts made from metal or other materials are placed or located into a moulding die prior to injection moulding. The injected plastic flows in and around the inserts, locking them permanently into the final moulding.

This process is commonly used to manufacture electrical contacts, interconnects, plugs, electrical chords, and to mould threaded inserts into plastic parts. Metal inserts are able to be located with excellent precision and the plastic shrinkage can be used to provide good sealing.

The main disadvantage of this process is the higher tooling cost and production handling costs.
