Micro-moulding is the manufacture of very small, often finely detailed plastic parts. Injection moulding of micro parts is typically a specialized field due to the requirements for injection moulding machines capable of small, accurate shot sizes and the toolmaking requirement for machining equipment capable of high spindle speeds and accurate movement to machine very small cavities and EDM electrodes in producing the small moulds. Knowledge of moulding materials such as Vectra™ of LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) are also quite important due to the ability of this material to flow into tiny cavities. It is typical for the sprue and runners in a micro-mould to be bigger that the part being moulded, although new techniques in hot runner micro-moulding have reduced the size of the sprue down to almost nothing.
Some typical applications for micro injection moulding are medical device parts, small insert moulding for micro-interconnects, overmoulding of small electronic devices for encapsulation, and manufacture of plastic parts for micro-devices.
