Overmoulding is the process of injection moulding plastic in and around another moulding or component to fully or partially encapsulate it. Overmoulding is often used to provide insulation around components containing PCBs and electrical connections. Over moulding can be used to assemble plastic parts onto a metal substrate such as the handles on many tools. Overmoulding can also be used to mould one plastic over another having different properties.
Some typical examples for overmoulding are moulded cable interconnects, audio plugs, RFID tags, security access passes, scissor handles, rubber grips, soft seals in harder plastics and grip surfaces on other plastic parts.
