Moulding with porous plastic can produced in 2 ways. The first is by means of injecting a blowing agent into a mould along with the injected plastic. The blowing agent creates small voids and cavities of random size within a moulded part to reduce the mass of plastic.
The second way is through a sintering process where granulated polymers are injected into a heated die and sintered together. Very accurate control over pore size is achievable using this process.
This method of porous plastic moulding is used to produce a wide variety of products such as filters, air vents, air silencers, marker nibs, wicking media, fluid storage media, air bleeds and absorbent media. The porous structure can usually be made hydrophobic or hydrophilic.
Also a useful property of micro-porous plastics is the ability to allow air to pass through until the fluid touches the filter which then shuts off the pores preventing the fluid from escaping. This property is commonly used for air bleeds in medical applications.
