Thixomolding is technically not a powdered metal process, but does use metal pellets. Thixomoulding is a patented process very similar to plastics moulding where pellets of metal are heating in a barrel until almost molten before being injected into the mould cavity.

Typically magnesium is the material used in this process which can produce very finely detailed metal parts having high strength and light weight.

While only just becoming available in Australia, Thixomoulding has been flagged as a future important manufacturing process for the Australian light metals industry, especially for magnesium moulding.
