Reverse engineering (RE) is the process of discovering the technological principles of a device or object or system through analysis of its structure, function, operation and measurements. It often involves taking something (e.g. a mechanical device, an electronic component, a software program) apart and analyzing its workings in detail, usually to try to make a new device or program that does the same thing.
Reverse engineering also commonly involves producing 3D CAD data from a physical component. This can be accomplished by a variety of methods such as:
- Conventional measurement
- CMM measurement and digitising (point cloud)
- Laser scanning
- Optical measurement, or optical scanning
3D Laser Scanning
Is the latest technique for producing 3D models. A physical part is mounted in the scanner and measured using a laser measurement head. A full 3D model of the exact geometry is produced. The 3D scanner can be mounted in a fixed position or the latest units have the scanner head mounted on a flexible arm for freehand scanning of complex geometries.
Another variation on this technique is what is know as point cloud CMM measuring machines. For this technique the measuring head is mounted on an arm which can flex through a full range of movement. The operator continually touches the probe on the surface of the part being digitised until enough points are measured to produced an accurate 3D representation.
