Stereolithography (SLA) is a Rapid Prototyping process which produces a physical, three dimensional object , a conceptual model, a marketing sample or master pattern from liquid polymer.

Stereolithography parts are always produced from computer solid 3D CAD model. Specifically a stl file.

In the opposite process to material removal such as CNC machining, a stereolithography machine uses a computer controlled laser to cure a photo-sensitive resin, layer by layer, to build the 3D part layer-by-layer.

Producing a pre-production SLA prototype of a part can greatly enhance the geometric visualization of a product, as well as communication between project team members. It allows designers to quickly move from design to physical part. Having a physical part gives designers, marketing staff and management a clearer idea if the design meets the form, fit and functional requirements.

Stereolithography is a fast method of prototype production. Prototypes to be made in a matter of days or even hours regardless of the complexity of the model.
