Selective Laser Melting or SLM is an additive manufacturing technology used to produce metal components by using a laser to melt layers of powdered material together to form a 3D shape and produce functional metal parts.
Selective Laser Melting is slightly different from laser sintering in that the layers are fully melted together to form a full dense part.
Selective Laser Melting can produce functional, fully dense parts in titanium, stainless steel, cobalt chrome and tool steels and has found great application in the medical implant, aerospace and dental sectors.
While SLM can be used as a rapid prototyping process, it is extremely useful as a direct manufacturing process able to produce extremely complex parts which would be impossible to produce by other means. The ability to produce almost any 3D shape gives engineers complete design freedom.
