Metal spinning is the process of forming a piece of flat sheet metal over a pre-turned, three-dimensional pattern while it is spinning on a machine tool similar to a lathe. The forming is accomplished by applying pressure to the metal as it spins thus forcing it against the form and causing the metal to take the shape of the form. Metal spinning is most commonly used for cylindrical or open forms; meaning that the opening diameter is larger than the rest of the form, thus allowing the spun metal to be easily removed from the pattern. When closed forms are required, it is possible to form the component as multiple pieces and then solder them together to form the final closed spun form. New technology has also seen the introduction of automatic metal spinning techniques using 3 rollers which can 'neck 'down an open form. An example of this technique is the manufacture of aluminium bottles for the alcoholic beverage industry.
Metals ideal for spinning include aluminium, copper, brass, pewter, bronze, silver and mild steel in gauges from 22 (0.6mm) to 14 (1.6mm). The metals should be annealed prior to beginning the spinning process. If the process it geometry has drastic changes along the form, it may even be necessary to anneal the metal a second or third time before the spinning can be completed.
Metal spinning is often performed under CNC control this is referred to as CNC metal spinning. Small runs and one off components can also be produced by hand spinning methods. Metal spinning is an ideal process for rapid prototypes and short run production. The mold can quickly and easily be made from wood. Alterations need only be made to the one mould, so changes to the design can be performed rapidly.
Some examples of products which can be formed by metal spinning include carburettor intake tubes, light shrouds, electronic housings, flanges, lids, pizza trays, cookware, cover plates, feed hoppers, and bowls of all descriptions. Metal spinning is also useful as a rapid prototyping process for the low-cost production of prototype metal forming.
