Patterns are used for creating a cavity in a sand box or other casting mediums prior to casting ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Patterns are usually accurate reproductions of the finished part but made slightly larger to allow for shrinkage of the metal as it cools. The pattern will often have runners and risers included. Patterns are made by specialist pattern makers and can be made from metals, wood, plastics, cured liquid polymers, fiberglass or composites.
