Steel rule dies or die cutting knives are used for die cutting of cardboard, gaskets, fabrics, metals and fibrous materials. Steel rule dies are often made by first laser cutting the desired shape into a timber substrate and then inserting the metal cutting edge. Rubber or urethane ejectors are then fitted to remove the finished product from the die.
Steel rule dies can also be made as an all-steel contruction as in leather cutting knives, but these types of steel rule dies are more commonly referred to as clicker dies.
