The process of welding using an oxy-acetylene torch has been around for many decades. Oxy welding is welding in its most basic form where the torch flame is used to melt the parent metal and a filler rod is used to add additional material to the weld. Oxy welding is typically a manual process and control over the gas mixture must be maintained to impart the desired properties to the weld.
Oxy welding is versatile in that it can be used to weld a variety of metals such as steel, copper, brass, and aluminium. Oxy-acetylene also has the advantage in being easily portable to almost anywhere making ideal for site work.
Modified oxy welding torches have also been used for many decades to carry out welding procedures underwater.
