Welding and Joining Processes - Resistance Welding, Spot Welding, Seam Welding

Resistance welding refers to welding processes that join 2 pieces of metal by passing a current through them and the resistance of the parent metals themselves causes them to melt.

Resistance welding can take on several forms. The most common being spot welding and seam welding.

In spot welding 2 copper electrodes are clamped either side of what is usually 2 pieces of sheetmetal. A current is passed through the electrodes and the resistance of the metal causes it to melt and form a weld in combination with the pressure from the electrodes.

With seam welding, the electrodes are rollers which are fed along the seam to be formed. Again the resistance of the metal and the pressure from the rollers forms a neat, controllable weld in a continuous seam.
