Black Oxide Coating or Chemical Blackening of Steel, Steel Bluing

Steel components can be protected from corrosion by applying a black oxide coating also commonly known as chemical blackening of steel. Black oxide coating is a low-cost method of protecting steel and stainless steel parts from corrosion and imparting an attractive finish.

Chemical blackening of steel is a process that causes a reaction of the steel surface by immersing it in an aqueous alkaline salt solution at elevated temperatures to produce a magnetite layer. Non-ferrous metals are also able to be coated under certain conditions but steels are normally the most commonly coated metal. It is also possible to use a room temperature black oxide coating process, but the results are typically not as good as the hot process. Issues such as colour variation and the black oxide rubbing off on your hands can occur.

Steel bluing is a different process which involves passivating the surface of the steel by an electro-chemical process leaving a corrosion resistant coating on the surface which is bluish in colour.
