Cold Spraying or Supersonic Coating
The process of cold spraying or supersonic coating works by accelerating metal powders or particles to super sonic speeds and firing them at the workpiece being coated. The particles impact the surface of the workpiece at such speed thy permanently bond with the surface. The surface metallurgy of the bonded layer is similar to cold worked metal.
The cold spraying or supersonic coating process can be used to coat almost any metal on a wide variety of substrates. Dissimilar metals can be easily bonded and the process can be used to spray a hard surface coating onto softer metal components.
One common application for the cold spraying process is in the manufacture of engraved printing rollers. Supersonic coating eliminates the multiple electroplating steps reducing the cost to manufacture printer rollers.
In ost cases the cold spraying or supersonic coating process is performed on cylindrical parts. However, robotic arms are now being used to coat a larger variety of geometries and even as a rapid prototyping process to build 3D parts.
