Fulfillment derives its name from the process of 'order fulfillment' where a person or company fulfills their obligation to send a person a product that the person has ordered.

Fulfillment covers a variety of contract manufacturing processes including assembly, filling, pick and pack, and kitting.

The fulfillment house will typically store and warehouse products or components to go into orders. An order is received by the fulfillment house and the products or components are picked from stock. Any processing or assembly is carried out, the items are packed, and the logistics and shipping are taken care of as well.

Fulfillment houses are often referred to as contract manufacturers, contract assemblers, or contract packagers.

Fulfillment can apply to mechanical assemblies, electronic assemblies, electrical assemblies, promotional products, beverages, food, printed goods to name a few examples.
