Heat Treating Services - Case Hardening
Case hardening is the process of imparting a hard surface to a steel or iron component. The substrate component is typically a low carbon steel and thus the case hardening process usually involves imparting additional carbon to the component surface through a powder, gas or molten salt medium. Apart from the more specialised nitriding, the main methods for case hardening are via molten salt bath, induction hardening and flame hardening techniques.
Case hardening is normally used to impart a hard surface to a component to improve wear resistance while retaining the inner, core strength and elasticity.
