QA and Inspection Services - Surface Roughness Measurement or Surface Finish Measurement
Component designers often specify a surface roughness requirement for their components. The surface roughness is specified by nominating a Ra value, or average surface roughness required which is specified in microns and this value specifies the finished surface required for their components to function as intended. Examples include specifying a fine surface roughness value for surfaces that have seals running on them, or to reduce stress concentrators to improve fatigue strength, or specifying a surface roughness value to impart a visually appealing finish. To accurately verify that the required surface finish has been achieved, surface roughness or surface finish measurement equipment is required. Surface roughness is measured by moving a stylus over the surface of the component and the measurement equipment is able to measure the up and down movements to micron accuracy. The surface profile is platted on a graph and the average value calculated (Ra value). Browse the directory below to find suppliers with surface roughness measurement equipment.
