Coating and Plating Processes - Chemical Vapour Deposition, Physical Vapour Deposition
Chemical vapour deposition is a process used to deposit a solid material from a gaseous state onto a component. Physical vapour deposition is the process of vapourising a material starting in solid form and depositing it onto the surface of the component to be coated. Physical vapour deposition is sometimes also called sputter coating or pulsed laser deposition depending on the exact process used. Both chemical vapour deposition and physical vapour deposition are used to apply high tech coatings to components. These coatings impart surface properties such as improved hardness or wear properties, reduced friction or increased oxidation resistance. Some well known examples of this process are diamond like coatings used on medical implants and diecasting moulds, or Blackmax and TiCNite coatings applied to metal cutting tools.
